Climate: Tasmania prides itself on having a mild maritime climate with four distinct seasons that is the envy of winemakers around the world. A bottle of internationally-acclaimed Tasmanian Pinot Noir can be enjoyed in front of an open fire during the winter months of June, July and August, while our pristine beaches are a delight for swimmers and holidaymakers from December to March. Average maximum daily summer temperatures are between 17 and 23 degrees Celsius and winter daily temperatures are between 3 and 11 degrees Celsius. Rainfall varies across Tasmania with heavily rain-forested areas on the West coast receiving an annual average of 2400mm and the capital Hobart averaging 626mm per year.
Airports: Tasmania has four major airports in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie/Wynyard with direct flights daily to Melbourne (50 minutes), Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. Direct flights from Hobart to China are expected to commence in the near future.
Shipping: The Spirit of Tasmania I and II ships traverse Bass Strait from Devonport in Tasmania to Melbourne every day for both passengers and freight. There are also numerous deep water ports around Tasmania for freight shipped daily around the world.
Road and rail: Tasmania is blessed with an abundance of well-maintained roads that criss-cross the State, the majority rated for heavy haulage. As no destination is more than two hours from the coast, Tasmania is easily and quickly navigated by road. A reliable and modern government-operated freight railway connects the state’s major production regions, cities and ports.
NBN: Tasmania was the first Australian state to receive the National Broadband Network. This provides high-speed fibre-optic internet connectivity to homes, schools and businesses and high-speed wireless hubs in rural and remote areas.
Mobile telephones: Tasmania’s major roads, all towns and most rural areas receive excellent mobile telephone coverage thanks to a statewide network of towers.
